It\u2019s been an hour. How does that even happen? The thing is, if it happens to you, imagine how easily it happens to your kids and teens. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research proves it. Studies show that teens spend an average of <strong>4-7 hours per day<\/strong> (!) on screens outside of schoolwork, with much of that time spent on social media. While social media can be fun, it can also seriously impact mental health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news? Kids and teens can take back control of their screen time\u2014and you can help them. The first video from this series is at the top of the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s a recap of Isabel&#8217;s video:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 1: Reality Check<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before you even <em>think<\/em> about changing your habits, you need to see what you\u2019re working with. Check your screen time (yes, it might be scary). If your jaw hits the floor, don\u2019t panic\u2014it\u2019s just data. Awareness is the first step to making a change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 2: Ditch the Morning Scroll<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know the first 20 minutes after you wake up are <em>primetime<\/em> for your subconscious? That means whatever you see first thing in the morning\u2014whether it\u2019s a bad comment, stressful news, or a perfect influencer\u2019s \u201ceffortless\u201d life\u2014will stick with you all day. Instead of starting your day in a doom scroll, try one of these alternatives:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A quick meditation or deep breathing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cooking up a new breakfast recipe<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Journaling or setting intentions for the day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stretching or doing light yoga (your body will <em>love<\/em> you for it)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 3: Find Fulfilling Substitutes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Scrolling isn\u2019t the enemy\u2014<em>wasting time<\/em> scrolling is. Swap some of your social media hours for things that actually align with what you <em>want<\/em> to do. Need ideas?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Want to read more? Grab a book instead of your phone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Love being creative? Sketch, paint, or try photography.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Feel like you never see your friends? Plan a face-to-face hangout (yes, even if it\u2019s just a quick coffee run).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Step 4: Small Changes, Big Wins<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t have to quit social media cold turkey. Even shaving off 30 minutes a day can boost your mood, focus, and motivation. And once you <em>feel<\/em> the difference, cutting back will get easier and easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Bottom line?<\/strong> Mindless scrolling can take over your time (and energy) if you let it.
