Often, many of us were raised by parents who said the above phrases that are considered what not to do. Therefore, when now as educators and parents we are faced with a situation and we are not sure what to do we fall back on the phrases and vocabulary that our parents used with us. It is so important that we begin to learn new phrases. Additionally, we often feel we need to “fix” the situation while instead we only need to acknowledge and be with the child through the feeling. Through this process, the child finds their own strength and builds their confidence with overcoming their big emotions. They also trust the adults in their lives to really “get” what they are feeling and to support them rather than dismiss or try to apply a quick fix…that ultimately does not help in the long run. The steps I like to remember are 1. acknowledge 2. Be with and be present, compassionately and with quiet contemplation 3. answer honestly any questions that arise. 4. when nerves have calmed ask curious questions together.
